Why Mitt Romney had a good month

The month of May was good to Mitt Romney. He clinched the GOP nomination. Voters are viewing him more favorably, especially Republican women. And a droopy economy is of no help to Obama.

Mitt Romney has had a good month, numbers-wise. That does not mean he?s suddenly become the favorite for November ? the 2012 presidential horse race is fairly stable and remains essentially tied. Nor does it indicate that Friday?s stinker of a jobs report by itself makes a Romney victory more probable. Many other important economic indicators will be released in the months to come.

What it means is that Mr. Romney has improved on the margins in some important underlying indicators and thus may be less vulnerable than Democrats believe to some of the Obama camp?s favorite attacks.

(Yes, that?s a mouthful. We?re trying to keep pesky political scientists from blogging that we?ve gone wild and crazy and overinterpreted a few poll results.)

For the presumptive GOP nominee, the most important trend of May might be that voters are judging him a bit more positively. In the latest Gallup results, from earlier this month, his favorable rating hit a new high of 50 percent. His unfavorable rating is 41, meaning he?s at a plus-8 in this overall measurement.

As recently as February, Romney?s Gallup favorable was only 39 percent. What?s changed is that Republicans? views of him have gotten much more positive, rising by 22 percentage points in the past three months. He?s doing better among independents, too, with a corresponding 11-point increase.

What?s fueling this? Perhaps it?s the simple fact that he beat all his GOP rivals. Winners look better just for having won.

?Presidential candidates typically get a spike in their favorable ratings in the wake of winning the nomination,? writes Gallup?s Jeffrey M. Jones.

Other polls show this same movement, though not all have Romney?s personal popularity at more than 50 percent. For instance, a new Washington Post-ABC survey has Romney with a 41 percent approval rating, up from 35 percent a month ago. President Obama still leads Romney in this measure ? 52 percent of Americans view the incumbent positively, according to Post/ABC numbers. But the gap is narrowing. In April Mr. Obama led in approval by 21 points. Now it?s 11, according to this survey.

And this surge happened at a time when the Obama campaign was increasingly turning its attention to an attempt to define Romney in a negative manner. Remember all that stuff about Romney?s record at Bain Capital?

Plus, Romney has not exactly had easy treatment from the press. There was the Washington Post report about the teen Romney leading a hair-cutting bully attack, plus all the will-Mitt-repudiate-Donald-Trump stories. It?s possible all that will show up in a future survey or be taken into account in some longer-term manner. But at the moment it doesn?t appear to be driving Romney down in the polls.

While expected, ?the recuperation in Mr. Romney?s favorability numbers ... reduces the risk that his personal qualities might cause him to lose an election that he otherwise would have won,? wrote New York Times polling analyst Nate Silver on his FiveThirtyEight blog recently.

The other number that?s looking a bit better for Romney is his rating with Republican women. In the Post/ABC poll, his approval rating among GOP-leaning women has jumped to 80 percent, up from 59 percent the month before.

Romney still rates poorly among Democratic women. That pushes his overall favorable rating among women down to 40 percent. But the gains among women in his own party have virtually closed his gender gap, at least in this latest survey. Women and men view him in about the same light.

Overall, the RealClearPolitics rolling average of major polls has Obama maintaining a slight edge over Romney of 2.5 percentage points.

'Green' EU farm rules criticised

EU plans for "green" farm-subsidy rules will reduce European food production and are likely to harm the environment, a Commons committee has warned.

Environment, food and rural affairs committee chair Anne McIntosh said the plans would "hurt UK farmers, consumers and our countryside".

The forthcoming changes to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) must be more flexible, the Conservative MP argued.

The European Commission said MPs were overstating the impact of its plans.

The Commission wants 30% of farm subsidies to be conditional on whether recipient farms have met certain environmental standards, a policy it has branded "greening" the CAP.

Under the proposals, farmers will need to grow at least three different crops, leave 7% of their land fallow and ensure that permanent pasture is maintained on their land.

Grassland removal

The committee supports the Commission's environmental aims, but argues that member states should be allowed to find their own ways of achieving them, tailored to local circumstances.

Ms McIntosh said: "It is a nonsense to think that farmers from Finland to Sicily should be tied to the same narrow prescriptive rules. One-size-fits all regulation cannot work across the range of environments found in Europe."

The proposal to leave 7% of eligible land fallow, in areas to be named "ecological focus areas" (EFAs), had "the greatest potential to deliver significant environmental benefits", the committee's report says.

But it questions how the figure of 7% was reached, and argues that the Commission has provided insufficient detail for MPs to judge whether the benefits would materialise.

If large areas of arable land were to become EFAs, food production in the EU will decline, the report points out, lamenting that the Commission "appears not to have considered food security" as it devised the policy.

Perversely, the new rules could damage the environment by introducing an "incentive to remove environmentally important semi-natural grassland", the report contends.

'No impact'

Ms McIntosh also underlined the successes already being achieved by UK farmers in voluntary environmental schemes under the current regulatory regime.

Commission spokesman for agriculture and rural development Roger Waite accepted that "some farms in the UK are leading the rest of the EU" on such schemes.

"We do not want to penalise the champions," he told the BBC.

The greening policy would not prove to be as rigid as MPs were claiming, he argued, since existing environmental schemes would be taken into account when deciding whether farmers had met the standards.

Further, the EFAs would have "no impact or in some cases a limited impact" on food production, Mr Waite said, because "hedges, ditches, field margins and other landscape features" could go towards the 7% target.

The Commission's aim was to ensure that "all farmers across the whole of the EU do more for the environment - not just some farmers in some parts of the UK", he concluded.

Friends of the Earth said the committee was right to highlight the benefits of crop rotation but said "MPs mustn't use concerns about a one-size-fits-all approach to agricultural reforms as a smokescreen for weakening efforts for a more planet-friendly approach to farming".

"There's no reason why EU farming plans can't contain strong, legally-binding environmental measures that take regional circumstances into account," the campaign group added.

Pressure on Qantas mounts as competition in business class ...

International operations of Qantas which is going in loss is reeling under increasing pressure ofreducing the fares which has moved even to the business class cabins in long routes.

Now the Chinese airlines have come to the fore strengthening their capacity to Australia which is offering their passengers a return fare of $5000 as against earlier $7000 between Europe and east coast cities.

?Discounts were a common for economy tickets but now the discounting has reached to business class also, according to Andrew Flannery who is chief financial officer of flight center. He also added that the cost of return fare of business class from Melbourne toEurope is being sold for less than $3500 this holds good even for the high season.

?Chinese airlines have been aggressive in selling their seats at a discounted price in order to build a strong market share for itself on routes to Australia according to the country?s biggest travel agency.China Southern has promised to triple its existing flights to Australia which will be more than 110 within a span of four years. According to the flight center during global financial crisis in 2008, the economy fares to destinations such as Paris, Bangkok and Rome were maintained well below the level.

?This can be seen as a boom to the travelers but heavy discounting of business class fares has put a threat on Qantas and also proved a dampener to the premium international. Qantas has lost roughly more than $200 million in the last financial year. There are other airlines such as Air NewZealand that are struggling to come out of losses from their long distances operations because of fierce competition and ever rising fuel prices.

?As per Qantas spokesman there is a spurge in the capacity on the routes to Australiain recent times as these have been taken over by the Chinese airlines and Middle Eastern. He said that when more and more airlines come in the competition, the fare drop drastically making it more and more difficult to sustain yields.

?Qantas on Friday said that it was not going for the two new A380 super jumbos for another four years which it had decided to take. This was in order to attain $400 million cut in spending in the next financial year.

?

?Matt Crowe, analyst of CBA Equities mentioned that Qantas had the intentions of buying A380 but now due to financial constraints it was not a good idea to acquire the airbus that may be to sacrifice competitiveness of your product offering to save cash

Belmont Stakes Betting Odds - Horse Racing Predictions

Belmont Stakes Odds ? Union Rags Might Be Overrated At Belmont

Written by North Shore Sports, Inc.

horse betting online

Our Belmont Stakes odds are posted at Bookmaker Sportsbook, and today, we?re taking a look at Union Rags, and how he will fare against the rest of the field in Belmont at the third leg of the Triple Crown on Saturday.

Belmont Stakes Odds

Horse Racing Betting Online:

Union Rags is set to tango with the 10 other horses at the 144th Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 9th at 6:35 ET from Belmont Park in Elmont, NY. We?re breaking down the Belmont Stakes odds for this, and all of the other horses in this field for the big race, which can be seen live on NBC.

Belmont Stakes Betting Odds
Union Rags 9/2

Wherever he has gone in his career, Union Rags has been a favorite. And perhaps for good reason! He has four wins in his career, and he had never finished worse than third place before the Kentucky Derby, where he was never a factor. This time around, Union Rags is going to be a favorite on the Belmont Stakes betting odds, but we just aren?t sure that it?s justified.

What we do love about Union Rags is his consistency. Not only did he have all of those great runs with four wins in his six races before the Derby, but his Beyer Speed Ratings have all been in the 90s as well since his very first race. There aren?t many horses that can say that they have six runs in the 90s in their career entering this race.

The bad news for Union Rags though, is that he just hasn?t shown growth. Look at I?ll Have Another for a second. He has continued to get better and better with every race that he has run, including getting all the way up to a 108 at the Preakness Stakes. He is a horse that looks to be getting stronger as his career goes on, and that?s good news for his bettors on the Belmont Stakes betting lines. But then go back to Union Rags. He had a 90 speed rating at the Kentucky Derby, finishing seventh in the race, and that was his worst mark since his first run around a track.

The one factor that is certainly not to be missed though, is that Union Rags possesses one fantastic run at Belmont Park in his career. His win by a whopping 5 ? lengths at the Champaign Classic as a two-year old came against a great field that he just ran away and hid from. This is going to be something that bettors love at the mutuels when they analyze the 2012 Belmont Stakes wagering odds.

Belmont Stakes Odds Pick ? Union Rags is going to be a popular choice at the Belmont Stakes, but we just don?t think that he is justified as one of the top three favorites. Could he end up in the money in third place? Sure. But in the end, this is a horse that is clearly inferior to both I?ll Have Another and Dullahan, and we foresee him finishing up quite a distance back from those top two horses.
