I?m not talking about light-weight selfishness but the selfishness that speaks to ?What?s in it for ME?? That type of selfishness is huge and my immediate reaction is ?WOW?! Now I have different types of WOW factors; one is a warning, you are stepping on dangerous ground. Another is I?m in disbelief and the other is cynical. This week it?s the Disbelief WOW.

Let me explain why?..

Marriages/Relationships take work and it takes two people from two different background to DECIDE to work together to accomplish ONENESS! Notice I said DECIDE, for it is a decision YOU internally make to BE with the other person. Which also means YOU must bring YOUR HONEST SELF to the table?no COUNTERFEITS ALLOWED, and decisions should not be based on: money, sex or any other factor that doesn?t take the other person into consideration.

This week all around me my listening ear has been in tune to life stories of other people. One sis saw anothers sis? poppin ring and you know the drill?SHE NOW WANTS ONE. A man must make his OWN choice to adjust to you just as you adjust to him. Did you see that word ADJUST? Did you know a man must adjust to the women he decides to love? Ohhhh, I hear another blog for the ladies?stay tuned. Anyway, in his adjustment he has to rearrange HIS life to fit YOU into it on every level. Can I make this statement? Most men typically do NOT ask a woman to marry him UNLESS he has logically figured out how HE believes SHE fits into HIS LIFE. So, with that being said, sis, if HE has asked you and you are aware of where he is financially be considerate. The size of the ring does NOT determine HIS LOVE! If he can afford something larger and decides small?it could be he?s purchased YOU a house or is saving for college funds or something else of value. Trust me if YOU already know he has a selfish trait then determine if things can be worked out. If he can?t afford what you want pay attention to this next paragraph, and remember what I said about being considerate. We all can choose to build a person up or crush a heart.

I remember hearing the story from my grandparents (Oliver?s), that when my grandfather asked my grandmother to marry him he had basically nothing (if I am quoting it correct he had less than a dollar in his pocket) and a sixth grade education. "During 28 four-hour surveys, we observed nearly nine times more intruders into protected areas when there was no bird steward, compared to when a steward was present," says Beth Forys, professor of environmental science and biology at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, who completed the survey in a report to the National Fish & Wildlife Federation.

Human disturbance greatly disturbs migratory and overwintering shorebirds, such as the Red Knot, a robin-sized shorebird whose numbers have significantly declined in the past decade.

"While most Red Knots migrate from breeding grounds in the Arctic to wintering grounds at the tip of South America, a small portion of the population overwinters in Florida," Forys explains. "To make the trip to the Arctic to breed, Red Knots must have enough energy, and over-harvesting of their prey combined with disturbance may be impeding their ability to gain enough weight to make the long trip."

To better understand what management measures could help Red Knots in their Florida wintering grounds, Forys conducted the study to see if the endangered bird would be able to forage and rest more if a portion of the beach were protected.

Frequency and sources of disturbance to Red Knots were determined both for a year-round, symbolically-fenced, "protected area" on a county park beach and for three municipal beaches without fenced-off protected areas for shorebirds. Differences between rates of human-related disturbances per hour of observation within the fenced-off protected area versus the unprotected beaches were statistically significant.

Dr. Forys' field research then evaluated frequency of human intrusions into a fenced-off shorebird protection area with and without a bird steward present at the boundary of the protected area.

"A bird steward is an individual who wears a labeled, brightly colored vest and who educates the public about birds while asking them not to enter a protected area," she says. "If people entered the protected area, the bird steward would ask them to leave."

"While relatively few people entered the posted area, the presence of bird stewards effectively decreased that number," she says.

"This two-year project provides strong evidence for the importance of establishing symbolically-fenced beach areas attended by bird stewards that together minimize human intrusion and disturbance to shorebirds," Forys says.

Debunking the Stereotype that Blacks Don't Surf (or Swim) | The Inertia

Of the many obstacles that Black swimming culture still faces, perhaps the most daunting, is the very notion that it does not exist: that a Black person enjoying the water is anomalous. Because, in fact, it has existed all along. Photo: Courtesy 12 Miles North

In the great and varied canon of American racial stereotypes, there is a highly detailed list of segregated sports. Basketball, for instance, is a ?Black? sport. Hockey, on the other hand, is for Whites. Surfing falls firmly into the category of ?white sport,? somewhere between mountaineering and golf. It could be argued that there is no ?whiter? sport in the world that was originally invented by non-whites. There are many ways to illustrate this, but let?s leave it here: It is the only sport since the 1936 summer Olympics in which the 2009 world champion, Mick Fanning, can say something overtly anti-Semitic to a reporter and the outlet that reports the statement will be blamed for bad taste.

Why don?t Black people surf? That can be answered with another race-based generalization. Black people don?t swim. Consider the numbers: A 2010 study by US Swimming, America?s governing body of competitive swimming, found that nearly half of White children (42 percent) had low or no swimming ability. That number was topped by Hispanic American children; 58 percent of whom reported no or low swimming ability. Black children had the highest non-swimming rates at just under than 70 percent. I suspect that the White numbers are slightly inflated based on the fact many that my Caucasian, land-lubbing friends define ?swimming? as walking into a pool up to their waist, getting out, then applying more coconut oil. But that doesn?t change the fact that swimming rates among Black children are abysmal. Infinitely more worrisome is that Black children are around three times more likely to drown than White children, based on another study by US swimming, which is apparently the only organization who studies these sorts of things.

There is one problem with these studies: although the numbers are correct, the conclusion that we causally draw from them is utterly corrupt. The numbers tell us that many Black people don?t swim; Our interpretation, however, is that Black people are not swimmers, which is wrong. The truth is that American Blacks have a long and well-documented history of loving to swim. In order to understand why African American culture does not currently enjoy a well established culture of recreational swimming, we need to delve under the stereotypes and generalizations and look at the history of exclusion that has accompanied their efforts to access the water.

?There were two periods of time in 20th century in which swimming became popularized and democratized in the US,? says Jeff Wiltse, author of the book Contested Waters: A Social History of Swimming Pools in America. ?The first was in the 1920s and 1930s. That?s really when swimming as a recreational activity became popular in US. The vehicles of this popularization were the swimming pools being built in inter-war period. However, it was during that time that blacks were being denied access or relegated to pools that couldn?t accommodate very many people or were generally less desirable.?

Wiltse?s book deals with the complex web of segregation that enveloped Black Americans upon their emancipation form slavery. In this web, the municipal swimming pool became ground zero for Jim Crow. When the first pools opened in cities like Philadelphia in the late 19th century, they were considered to be public baths and located in a low-income neighborhood so that people without access to running water could clean themselves. These pools were segregated by sex but integrated as far as race was concerned. One of the first pools to combine the sexes was the Fairgrounds pool in St. Louis, which opened to great fanfare in 1913. By then, the swimming pool had turned from a public hygiene project into a coveted leisure space, which was quickly becoming an American institution. At 440 feet in diameter, the circular Fairgrounds Pool was the largest in the country by a country mile. It was ringed by an artificial sand beach and had an inclined bottom that mimicked the gradual deepening of the sea floor. The recreation department even considered putting a wave machine in but nixed the idea because it was too expensive. On hot summer days, thousands of people packed into the pool. None of them were Black. This was not for lack of desire on the part of Black residents of St Louis. Instead, the pool was forcibly, and at times violently segregated because city officials didn?t want black men interacting with white women in such an intimate space. Wiltse cites the Fairground pool as ?one point of origin of the mixed-gender, racially segregated leisure society that came to predominate during the twentieth century.? The fear of black men interacting with white women in swimwear kept pools firmly segregated until the mid 1950s.

When some Black people began to resist the race barrier, either through lawsuits filed with the backing of the NAACP or through actually entering a pool and trying to swim, they were often met with a host of legal tricks, violence, or a combination of the two. A common way of segregating a pool was for the city government to lease the pool to a private company to operate. Although the government couldn?t legally segregate, a private company could make whatever rules it wanted.

In smaller towns, they would often promise angry Black communities their own swimming pool for years without delivering. In 1942, Montgomery, West Virginia closed its only municipal swimming pool for four years instead of permitting interracial swimming. When the Fairground Pool was desegregated in 1949, five thousand White people rioted and indiscriminately beat any Black person they could get their hands on near the park where the pool was located.

Whitney Houston to be buried next to father (omg!)

NEW YORK (AP) ? Whitney Houston's final resting place will be next to her father, John Russell Houston Jr.

Houston will be laid to rest at the Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, New Jersey, after funeral services on Saturday, a source close to the family confirmed. Houston's father was buried there in 2003.

Fifteen hundred guests are expected to attend the private funeral services including Aretha Franklin, Clive Davis and Stevie Wonder.

Houston died in Beverly Hills at age 48, one day before the Grammy awards.

Against. For. Against. For. The Case of QR Codes. | Advertising ...

The Backstory

I was with a group of my college buddies visiting from out of town, many of whom had never been to or even possessed any working knowledge of Miami outside of a particular Will Smith song. As we walked around Miami?s Financial District ? where I call home ? my friend, an engineer, questioned rather eloquently:

?What do those white and black squares everywhere actually do??

I refrained from answering, knowing full well what was in store just around the block.

As we turned the corner into a large open lot crawling with food trucks ? a staple in Miami?s burgeoning street food scene ? each truck had those ?white and black squares? (read: a QR Code) attached in some fashion.

I began explaining these little boxes and the content that should be uploaded to them in hopes of justifying their excessive presence throughout our urban landscape, overly extolling the exploration that lay waiting within each square. Without further delay ? and subsequent cooling of our food truck tacos ? I took a quick scan with my trusty QR reader app.

I was ready to blow my friend?s mind; I literally held the future in my hands.

Then something unexpected happened?

A desktop website. Facebook pages. Twitter profiles. I was left holding a bag of mediocre execution that seemed to bury the technology in the eyes of my already skeptical friend.

Not one code offered a reason why my buddy would ever be interested in scanning one of these digital graveyards. Seeming more Escher than Einstein to my mathematically gifted pal, I thought to myself, ?How on earth could I right this wrong??

The Challenge

Upset, confused, and still slightly hungry, I decided to set out on a quest to challenge myself. I would scan every single QR Code I passed in my neighborhood, the neighborhood where I worked, and any extras I found along the way for an entire day.

I knew this would actually be quite a frenzy.

Bus stops were to be passed, condos needed to be shilled, coasters needed to be relieved of their twelve ounce paperweights. This was not an effort to boost QR Code?s monthly usage, but rather an experiment of content, time, and most importantly, of pride.

The Experiment

I start each day with a quick walk to a local pastry spot, followed by a quick run to Starbucks before heading to the office. After work, I head to a pub, oyster bar or whichever establishment has the lights on.

The following is a true story. Names have been removed to protect the innocent.

Code One: ?Chamomile?

As I passed multiple bus stops en route, the first QR Code appears in the wild. I felt like I was playing the Nintendo 64 game ?Pokemon Snap?.

This code?s ad copy ? cut out of the silhouette of a running business man?s briefcase ? promised a ?relaxing, lifestyle experience?.

I paused to scan.

The irony of the situation apparent, this ad?s target demographic would have already sped past the sign without a second to scan, hustling to make their next meeting.

Alternatively, perhaps there was an all-briefcase relay race they would be participating in.

I received a website that prompted me to enter another website. So far, so ?eh? ? but I?m the sporting type. I enter the site and am greeted by a wall of text. Stress relief, proven tactics, and a discount if I mention scanning the QR Code.

At this point you must be asking yourself, ?What the hell is the service??

I could not tell you.

After a paragraph of new age buzzwords ? and the liberal use of the word ?chamomile? ? it was all too much.

I stopped.

Wait, I take that back.

I ran.

Perhaps that?s what it was trying to tell me all along.

Code Two: Flaky Frustration

It is now pastry time; flaky and delicious. Much deserved after my altercation with the previous code. As I frequent this establishment, I was familiar with the menu and its predominantly displayed quick response code. Having never scanned it before, now was the time.

For science.

I grabbed the menu, took my phone out, opened the app. Customers in line behind me looked on quizzically ? or with annoyance ? as I scanned the code on the menu.

Boom.

The impossible happens.

It takes me to a digital version of the menu. How could this be?

While I attempted to convince myself that this was done to avoid folks opening up their flashlight app in a low lighting condition ? blinding another customer from across the bistro in the process ? it hit me.

This place closes at 2PM.

This code simply brings up the menu on your phone accessed via the menu. Xzibit meme joke aside, the lesson learned is clear:

QR Codes are not a spectacular vehicle for demonstrating the concept of a Mobius Strip.

Code Three: Caffeine, I mean, Starbucks

I waited in line for my red eye and pocketed my phone ? if only for a brief moment ? as another code reaches my retina. Surely this would be much better than those previous efforts.

The scannable was attached to a bracelet fundraising effort to create jobs for the USA.

I was intrigued.

Where would this code take me, and what stories would it share?

I was not disappointed as a website optimized for mobile ? finally!!! ? opened up with options to view a digital short on the project, experience the success stories of the campaign, read the stories and ideas of the community, and even contribute my own.

Not too shabby at all.

I?d found three codes just to find a truly engaging one.

I had almost lost hope, as this experiment closely resembled a digital version of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

On to Work

We have a custom QR Code on our door, but I won?t get in to that as we designed and created the content behind it. Moving on.

Code Four: Lunch

Or: How My Italian Grandmother Will Never Forgive Me

A fantastic part of the day, as I?m finally able rest my eyes from staring at a 15 inch screen all day. Lunch affords me the opportunity to slow down (read: catch up) by staring at a four inch screen. I dined at an Italian restaurant known for its exotic pasta dishes and home design-heavy elements.

I skimmed through the bilingual menu, knowing full well that I would be ordering my usual rigatoni al dente.

Sadly, this would not be a wet lunch, as my previous attempt at replicating Mr. Draper ended my dreams of ever fully accepting neat whiskey into my life. However, I was not out of the ad game entirely, as there was an addition to this particular menu:

A shiny new QR Code.

Intrigued, I wondered what immersive experience could be behind such a delicious code. I scanned and was instantly greeted by a video of the chef preparing the latest special.

Bravo.

A digital piece that offered an informed dining decision.

I could see the ingredients ? an important note, considering there were many that I could not pronounce (sorry grandma) ? the preparation, and ultimately, the completed dish.

This deep in my quest, I was relieved by actually being offered some value. Granted, it would have to be changed frequently, considering content has about the same shelf life as an eatery?s ingredients.

I hate myself for that observation.

Intermission

I felt the need to take a breather.

I had scanned codes on various mediums in a multitude of places, discovering the good, the bad and the absolutely ghastly. But with these results, would my extensive scanning efforts retroactively convince my pal that QR Codes are actually worth the trouble?

Code Five: Dinner, Drinks and Disappointment

And: I swear this is still about QR Codes

I chose the pub after work, a goliath of an establishment complete with Irish fare right down to the island?s quaint, traditional soundtrack. You know, Flogging Molly.

Regardless, I order a dish that could be considered the potato version of Inception and what can only be described as a slice of the heartiest ale available.

The app, in a nutshell, helps inebriated fellows get a cab home.

Great job, beer producer I won?t name!

Although one thing was missing:

A QR Code.

This seems like an especially worthwhile spot for our quick response friend.

Take me directly to the app store so I can download your app so I can just get me home.

To make a long post even longer, how about a quick blurb about what we?ve learned:

1. Have some ?strategery?

QR Codes are not just there to be thrown about next to the now obligatory Facebook ?f? icon. Make sure it furthers your brand?s narrative in a way people actually care to follow.

2. Speak the language of content

Are you producing something that could actually live on its own? If the answer is no, do not pass go, do not collect $200.

3. Go all in or just stay at home

Create a series. Offer consumers the ability to change the next part of the digital adventure through their interaction. Build a community of storytellers that will keep returning to updated content.

4. Build a bridge

If that certain opportunity arises where a QR Code may act as a bridge, by all means run across it. The opportunity for the obvious eludes even brands with the most eyes upon them.

5. Layer the experience

When utilized effectively and appropriately with an eye toward the overall strategy of a campaign, QR Codes are actually a great way to add additional layers to your project.

Tasty layers.

Like beef topped with cilantro, jalape?o and onion.

GE turns butterfly-inspired tech into cheap, accurate thermal sensors (video)

When last we heard from GE and its Morpho-butterfly inspired sensors, all the talk was about detecting chemicals. And, with $6.3 million in funding coming from DARPA, we're not surprised. In the latest issue of Nature Photonics, however, the company's researchers show that the wing-like structures are just as good at detecting heat as they are ricin attacks. By coating them with carbon nanotubes the team was able to create a sensor sensitive to temperature changes as small as 0.02 degrees Celsius with a response rate of 1/40 of a second. The sensors could eventually find their way into imaging devices and medical equipment, and are expected to cost just a fraction of similar technologies currently on the market. Of course, since DARPA is still involved with the project, there are some potential security uses as well -- such as screening devices and fire detection.
